Found in the center of Manchester, Chaophraya is an exciting and opulent place. Place over two floors and featuring sunken seating and an open kitchen, Chaophraya Manchester is the best setting for evening meal, a business lunch or special occasion.
Taking its name from the Chao Phraya (pronounced Chao-pi-ya) river that is the principal waterway in Thailand, Chaophraya’s food and beverage represent the authentic essence of Thailand. The essence of Thailand is delivered at a tranquil and smart restaurant upstairs and Chaophraya with its bustling pub downstairs.
THAI FINE DINING
Chaophraya’s Mott is “OW JAI SAI” which interprets as “from the heart” It means that everything matters to them and they care about everything! The popular Thai food cooking school at Chaophraya enable diners to master the expert skills of the seasoned Thai chefs.
Minutes away from King Street, it was the perfect place to go for a birthday lunch. You're immediately impressed by the opulence and we could not have asked for a warmer welcome. We were offered the impressive deep-set seated dining table, but chosen for a table in the middle of the busy restaurant. My dinner guests were practiced Thai food specialists and opted to ‘ go ’ that is hot, much to the joy of the server. They were not disappointed! Being conservative the flavours were unbelievable and I opted for the classic Thai green curry, which was hot enough
Chaophraya Manchester is something of a popular choice for foodies in the city. Well known for service that is amazing and its high quality food, it’s the go to place for upmarket group dinners, Christmas celebrations and birthday bashes. It’s fairly bustling, so additionally, it makes for a great place to take work co-workers and family, although you likely need to ask for a snug corner if you’re on a date.
The decor feels decadent and traditional, with a high finish and elegant details. There are loads of genuine Thai flourishes, but also a friendly formality that reassures you of a good meal and great service from the minute you arrive. Fortunately, Chaophraya really can deliver what it promises.
Looking around the venue, we were keen to sit in one of the sunken seats by the window, giving us a loads of class although a cosy, low table with an informal feel and a view regardless. We were greeted to live music from Good Indeed Music, who were just starting up as we were seated. This set the tone for a relaxed, sumptuous. There was a nice atmosphere, with the eatery rather active but the service prompt.
The menu is excellent. There’s plenty to pick from, but no so much you’re overwhelmed. Those people who are more adventurous can get some really loud dishes (see below), while the more conservative diner can still get classic favourites for example Thai green curry and massaman curry.
Because I like to try an extensive range of foods whenever I visit a restaurant (and consistently look struck with food envy), my companion and I started off with the appetiser fondue. In a Thai twist on a cheese fondue, this was a delightful variety of chicken satay, pork, prawn, grilled squid on bamboo skewers and Thai fish cakes. It must be purchased for a minimum of two people, and it’s a great alternative for groups, with something for everyone. The dunking makes for something social and pleasurable to do while you eat, and creates a talking point for the most proper of dinner dates.
What came out was a mountain of meat: lamb chops, chicken breast, king prawns and grilled sirloin steak flambéed with whisky. This was served on a brochette with grilled vegetables, Panang sauce and green curry sauce. We'd rice, also, but really, it simply was’t needed. We could’ve feasted on the meat and been full – and, indeed, scarcely touched the vegetables. This would be excellent if you’re on the Atkins.
The meat was obviously of a high quality, and was cooked to perfection. The steak and prawns were my favourite, while my companion loved the chicken and lamb, so we were well served by the choice on offer. The dramatics of the dish – when you absolutely must impress or which burns blue as it flambées – makes it excellent for parties.
As we were full, the night we settled on another round of cocktails and some light sorbet to conclude. There are a variety of cocktails, including classics with a Thai twist, such as Mai Tai, the Bloody Mary, Long Island Ice Tea and Margarita.
All things considered, Chaophraya is a consistent and outstanding Thai restaurant, offering a tasteful surroundings with special service, for high quality food.
